<image:title>News - A Reflection on the Certification Journey - Suzanne Moss, Owner and Operator of The Nature Bus; President and Founder of Nature Matters, based in Virginia Beach; and retired classroom educator is our newest Virginia Certified Environmental Educator!</image:title>
<image:caption>If you follow our blog, you know that we typically share about our newest certified educators via an interview-style post. However, as Suzanne was completing her final submissions in the Certification Program, she penned a reflection that speaks so well to what we hope for our certification candidates, that we did not want to alter it one bit.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - A Reflection on the Certification Journey - When I began this program, I couldn’t have articulated realistic goals, nor could I have designed a meaningful professional development plan. Thankfully, the NAAEE and VAEE teams had already done that work for me. The “Guidelines for Excellence – Professional Development for Environmental Educators” published by NAAEE (ISBN #1-884008-78-X © 2019) and the step by step assignments in the VAEE program, exposed me to important learnings in the following categories: A Vision for the Future; Essential Underpinnings of EE; and the Instructional Vision of EE. The program guidelines are broken down into six (6) themes: 1. Environmental Literacy; 2. Foundations of EE; 3. Professional Responsibilities of the Environmental Educator; 4. Planning and Implementing EE; 5. Fostering Learning and Promoting Inclusivity; 6. Assessment and Evaluation. These guidelines became my compass, helping me grow in ways I didn’t even know I needed. I was guided step-by-step toward becoming a well-rounded environmental educator.</image:title>

<image:title>News - A Reflection on the Certification Journey - Second, as owner of The Nature Bus, I’ve gained the humility to recognize that I don’t have to be the guide on the tours. My role is to design and support experiences led by true subject-matter experts — naturalists, ecologists, and interpreters — while continuing to learn alongside them. That realization brought me immense peace.</image:title>

As soon as she saw that the calendar date might work, she had already begun to think about how to bring her learning to students at Heritage High School where she has taught Earth Science, Environmental Science, AP Environmental Science, and new this year, the IB Environmental Systems and Societies course.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Dan River Basin Association strives to provide meaningful environmental education programs to all youth in southside Virginia. DRBA has expanded its capacity from a one-person education staff to over 20 highly knowledgeable educators by launching the Volunteer Environmental Educators (VEE) program in 2023. Through this effort, DRBA can consistently reach more youth throughout their 3,300 square mile, 16-county basin. Their great strides in differentiation and centering inclusion and their Educating the Next Generation of Environmental Stewards program exhibit exemplary EE practice.</image:caption>

I have taught every grade between Preschool – Grade 6, and I am beginning my 10th year as an Elementary Science Resource Teacher. My role includes teaching STEAM, leading the Science program, serving as the Get2Green Leader, managing our 6 outdoor learning spaces, and leading our Eco-Action program (Eco-Schools US). I want students to be part of their own learning: students design their own gardens, plan and execute Science experiments, use technology in real-world applications, become confident communicators, and/or handle fossils/plants/animals. I want students to learn from experts in the field, so I use emails, phone calls, or Zoom calls to make that happen. I am very passionate, and I empower my students to advocate for themselves. We earned our first Eco-Schools USA Green Flag in Spring 2020, and we earned our second one in Spring 2022. In Fall 2023, we transitioned to the Eco-Schools US program, and our students designed another school-wide Action Plan to make school-wide changes that are positive and proactive. We were one of 136 schools in the USA to earn a Green Flag during the 2023-2024 school year. We work with community members to have a wider reach. That sometimes means we have support coming to Riverside ES (e.g. Arcadia Farms coming to help us plant). Other times, we help others (e.g. donating Common Milkweed or Monarch caterpillars to a nearby school). All of Riverside Elementary School’s students are Eco-Action Team Members, which means they start in Preschool to learn how to care for our outdoor spaces. We have been doing this work since 2016, and I am proud to see how our confident students are participating in programs in their middle schools and high schools.” “Our students are role models, problem solvers, and future leaders. I’m proud to be the first step on their journey.”</image:caption>

<image:title>News - Congratulations to Kathleen Herron on her EE Certification! - What drew you to complete Virginia’s Environmental Education Certification Program? “In the beginning, I signed up by mistake. I thought I was signing up for an Environmental Education Endorsement towards my VDOE Teaching Certificate. I quickly learned there were so many things that I didn’t know about Environmental Education, and my role as a classroom teacher was a small part of the overall reach of Environmental Education. My introduction activity was an online meeting series with our cohort members, and most of them were not [classroom] educators. I realized this opportunity would allow me to collaborate with experts, and I would have to get out of my comfort zone. Once I understood the scope of the program, I was committed to the program and challenged myself to finish.”</image:title>

<image:title>News - John Lord earns EE Certification - Congratulations to John Lord on his recent certification! John can now include Certified Virginia Environmental Educator in his resume, emails signatures, dinner conversation, or even his own personalized bumper sticker (If he chooses to create one). Not only does he now carry an esteemed certification within the Commonwealth, but because the program is now nationally accredited by NAAEE, he can carry this certification anywhere within the United States. We thought you should get to know John a little better, so we asked him to answer a few questions for us.</image:title>

<image:caption>My paying job is Energy Management Coordinator for Fairfax County Public Schools. My job can be stated in one sentence: We work to keep from paying unnecessarily high utility bills so that we can spend the money on teaching students instead. The focus of my job is people. People use all the things that require energy. The decisions we make regarding how we use energy make a huge difference. When we reduce energy use and eliminate waste, we not only reduce energy cost, but we also avoid producing greenhouse gas emissions and lower our environmental impact. The program is good for so many different reasons.</image:caption>

<image:title>News - John Lord earns EE Certification - As I mentioned, I work with people. I am an educator first and foremost. In fact, my program at FCPS is called the Energy Education program and my team members are called Energy Education Specialists. We do work with equipment and are knowledgeable about how mechanical systems work, but our primary area of attention has always been educating people and changing the culture. Before I became an energy manager, I taught Spanish for 10 years in a public school in Virginia. I believe in education and know that long-term change and improvement is almost always based on a foundation of education. Any thing worth doing requires someone to know as much as they can to do that thing well. Whether it is speaking another language, knowing how to eliminate energy waste and choose conservation and efficiency first, or to educate others about topics important to our shared environment, we must have a solid background of knowledge and expertise.</image:title>

<image:title>News - Virginia’s Environmental Education Certification Program Earns Accreditation - Eric Weyer fulfills his passion for connecting people to their natural world and finding ways to make choices that support the health and well-being of our intertwined human and environmental systems by serving in a volunteer capacity for a number of organizations but, chiefly, through Virginia Master Naturalists. He got to know this growing community along the way: “I did not expect that learning from and connecting with other educators would be a large part of the program, and it’s been a wonderful surprise. Between our in-person and virtual workshops, the absolutely wonderful experience with the Nature Conservancy on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, and the recent VAEE conference in Manassas, I feel like I really got a chance to connect with people and learn a multitude of different approaches that I can integrate within my practice.”</image:title>

<image:title>News - Virginia’s Environmental Education Certification Program Earns Accreditation - That Eastern Shore trip that Eric mentions resulted from Jennifer Miller, another certification candidate, thinking about how creating an experience at her workplace, The Nature Conservancy’s Volgenau Virginia Coast Reserve, could provide an important opportunity for fellow candidates in the program. “I think one of the most surprising things is how involved in the program I have become to really connect with other educators around the state and share with them what the Eastern Shore of Virginia has to offer. At first I felt like I would learn a lot and just get in and out and be done with it and say “I’m certified” and use all this new knowledge, but I’ve really enjoyed taking on a more active role and hope to continue connecting other educators with the Shore as well as other work TNC does around the state.”</image:title>

<image:title>News - Virginia’s Environmental Education Certification Program Earns Accreditation - The skills learned in this program are even serving candidates outside of their work in direct education. Sydney Murray recently moved into the position of Conference and Communications Coordinator for Natural Start Alliance. She states, “Even though I'm not currently active in the field as an educator, this certification program has equipped me with so much insight on what makes for quality environmental educational experiences across all age groups - and that's very relevant to my new work still.”</image:title>

<image:title>News - Virginia’s Environmental Education Certification Program Earns Accreditation - "Seeing the news about our accreditation made me tear up. I have served on the CAB since 2018 and no other professional group I have served with has been as determined, motivated and deeply connected to the work as the CAB. By working on the certification program, I have expanded my own environmental education knowledge and skills plus gained lifelong friends from across Virginia. It's amazing what people can do when they are laser focused on a goal. We joked from the beginning that all we had to do was keep working because we just needed it to be 'a thing.' And now our ‘thing’ is nationally accredited!"</image:title>

<image:title>News - Converging and Learning on Virginia’s Eastern Shore - Throughout the weekend, thanks to transportation donated by certification candidate Suzanne Moss and The Nature Bus, her own environmental education business, our group of ten certification candidates found plenty of time to share experiences, ideas, insights, and wisdom and to enjoy time with others who are passionate about our environment and education. Just as an ecosystem is composed of diverse niches, roles, and organisms all uniquely vital to healthy functioning, we learned the importance of all our unique perspectives and skills to building a stronger community of practice.</image:title>

<image:title>News - Converging and Learning on Virginia’s Eastern Shore - On Sunday, our group hiked through Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve, a protected area due to the resident endangered tiger beetle population. Leaders Jenny and Zoe modeled nature walk interpretive best practices on the hike by pointing out local flora and fauna along with best techniques to find and identify important species. The dune walk took us to the bayside beach for specimen and shell hunting along with time in the warm waters. In this small secluded inlet, we caught sight of what might be one of the last tiger beetles as it scurried away from us up the sand. Hardening projects at Wallops Island miles up the coast and a rocky inlet construction project for a private home just on the southern edge of the preserve are changing the water-land dynamics in this small area. The beach is eroding, trees are falling, and the tiger beetles have nowhere to go. Understanding and communicating these downstream impacts and complex interactions is an important aspect of our work as environmental educators.</image:title>
